The Culture Exhibit
Thomas Smith
Thomas Smith is an Athens, Georgia–based photographer and visual artist working throughout the Atlanta area. Through portraiture, editorial photography, and visual storytelling, his work explores identity, culture, self-expression, and belonging. His practice blends intentional portraiture with conceptual storytelling, often using fashion, movement, symbolism, and everyday environments to examine the ways people carry and express both individual and shared histories.

Unity, to me, is not sameness. It is the willingness to recognize and stand beside one another across the histories, cultures, and experiences that make us different. Genuine unity does not require us to erase those differences or overlook the difficult histories that have shaped us. Instead, it asks us to acknowledge them, learn from them, and recognize that belonging should not require someone to sacrifice part of who they are.
Through my work, I often explore identity and belonging: who is allowed to belong, whose experiences are recognized, and how our individual histories shape the way we understand one another. To me, unity begins with that recognition. It is choosing to share space, understanding, and humanity while allowing each person’s identity to remain whole.
