Shakya Germany
Born in Kansas and raised in Atlanta, GA, Shakya Germany is a multidisciplinary artist inspired by documenting memory, beauty in the mundane, and Black cultural traditions. Rooted in her family’s ties to South Carolina’s countryside, her work celebrates the richness of slow Southern life, home spaces, and inherited rituals. Through her lens, everyday moments, like the communal care of tending to black hair, become archives of tenderness, connection, and Black culture.

I identify my culture as Southern Black. A culture rooted in storytelling, care, and community. When I visit my family’s country town, I’m reminded to slow down and find beauty in small rituals, in the land, and in the bonds that hold us together. Losing our family matriarch last year revealed how quickly memories and traditions can fade, and how easily the familiar becomes sacred once it’s gone. That awareness inspires how I see and create which is with the intention of documenting everyday moments that honor where I come from and the traditions that connect us.
